The Mayor of Milano Beppe Sala has fired a warning to AC Milan and Inter regarding their respective plans to build new stadiums outside of the city limits.
Milan’s owner Gerry Cardinale has persistently stated his desire to replicate what other sports heavyweights have done by building a new state of the art home, one that does not just have a stadium but also has shops, a museum, a hotel and other amenities.
The ‘save San Siro’ project was revealed by the council in collaboration with the firm WeBuild. The works would cost €300m and would not force the two teams to find a new place to play during, but things are yet to really get off the group.
Thus, the leaders have shifted the idea of the initial plan of either renovating San Siro or building a new shared home there to moving to San Donato. Land was purchased in the region and the Program Agreement process began.
Sala spoke today at Republic Day to the reporters present, who asked him about the future of San Siro and the two clubs who currently use it, with his comments relayed by Calciomercato.com.
“I haven’t yet met the representatives of Oaktree, Inter’s new owners, and I don’t know what their line may be on the stadium. I’m waiting to see them because I need to know what the fate of San Siro will be,” he said.
“WeBuild has assured me that they will deliver the feasibility study by the end of June, it seems to me that they are already ahead with the work.
“I am certain that they will arrive at a feasible proposal, both in terms of costs and timing of the operation and very limited problems with the carrying out of sporting activities.
“Now it is up to the teams to understand whether they want to continue along the path of restructuring San Siro or for a stadium for each.
“Two stadiums so close together cannot coexist. We know the territory and when we think of building something impressive, we think of the south of Milan because the north is completely anthropised.
“However, it means fitting into green areas and two stadiums so close together is obvious which can not co-exist. I don’t know how it is conceivable to have two such stadiums very close together.”
