The Champions League is no longer just a presitigious sporting achievement for major clubs. For the teams at the top of European football, it represents a key financial item capable of shaping plans and allowing investments for a brighter future.

During a Affari&Finanza talk (via MilanVibes), Scaroni analysed the relationship between results on the field and economic sustainability, focusing on the impact of the new 36-team Champions League formula as a key example.

“For a club like Milan, the Champions League means additional revenues of between 70 and 130 million euros: it can be worth around a quarter of the turnover,” he began.

“Managing a club is like climbing two mountains at once: that of sporting results and that of financial results. If you lose pace on one, you lose pace on the other. We’re no longer in the world of Berlusconi and Moratti. Certain capital increases would be impossible today.”

Among Milan’s strategic investments is the new San Siro stadium project, which Scaroni believes will be crucial for long-term planning.

“The new San Siro arena, built jointly by AC Milan and Inter, will be the most beautiful in Europe. RedBird, the fund that owns our club, has experience in this sector; it’s not just a financial investor.”

During Scaroni’s presidency, Milan significantly increased their turnover. Revenues went from €241m in 2018 to €495m in 2025. Now, the ambition is to smash through the €500m mark and continue up towards €1bn.
