AC Milan and Inter have been working on the plans for a new stadium for a very long time and there are still many hurdles to overcome. As a result of this, the Rossoneri’s president Paolo Scaroni has sent a clear message.
The takeover of RedBird Capital has seemingly accelerated the stadium project and CEO Gerry Cardinale is keen on having a world-class facility for Milan. This acceleration has been reflected in the recent interviews made by the club members.
Speaking to Il Foglio, as cited by SempreMilan.it, Milan president Paolo Scaroni explained why the new stadium is so important for Milan. He also made it clear that they will move forward with the first area that gives them the green light.
“The world of football, like any other entertainment sector, is made up of products and the ability to sell them. We have to present a product that you like. Football is indeed a sport but also a spectacle and a spectacle requires a beautiful and possibly well-lit stadium, always full of fans, modern, neither too big nor too small.
“Not only do we have more empty stadiums but we also have older ones and we are unable to collect money from the activities that are present outside and around the stadium. The combined revenues of Milan and Inter for the 17/18 and 18/19 seasons are lower than those of Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United considered individually.
“We will move forward with the first area that gives us the green light. I’m quite optimistic about the San Siro area. Of course, when in November we decided to lower the volumes for non-stadium activities, the last thing I would have imagined is that it would take another year to wait for the public debate. So it becomes a very complicated process,” he stated.
It will either be San Siro, where the current stadium is, or Sesto San Giovanni which is about 15-20 minutes from the Duomo with the metro. In the latter case, Milan could build on their own and without Inter, potentially.
