AC Milan’s leadership has given Marco Giampaolo the green light to revert to a 4-3-3 formation at his discretion, a report claims.

Giampaolo – who arrived over the summer to replace Gennaro Gattuso – spent all of preseason working on his favoured 4-3-1-2 system.

Results in the summer friendlies were mixed but there were positive signs in the games against Benfica, Manchester United and Feronikeli.

Doubts still remained among the Milan fanbase as to whether certain players such as Suso could adapt to the new formation, and their worries were confirmed on Sunday night.

The Rossoneri failed to register a single shot on target against Udinese as they fell to a 1-0 defeat in the opening game of the season.

Giampaolo told Sky Italia after the game (via Football Italia) that he is considering scrapping the 4-3-1-2 in favour of a 4-3-3.

Now, the reliable Sky Italia – as cited by MilanNews.it – note that Milan will return to using the 4-3-3 as Giampaolo alluded to, which was ironically Gattuso’s favoured system

Club leaders (not named, but likely Maldini, Boban and Massara) have already discussed it ‘for days’ with the head coach.

The report goes on to add that the intention is to make Suso feel more comfortable as he is a natural winger and the main creative force in the current Milan squad.

In addition, the switch of formation means that the transfer targets could also change – a bold strategy considering there are just days of the mercato left.
