Reflections on Silvio Berlusconi’s tenure as AC Milan owner continue after his passing earlier this week, and the sheer scale of his investment has been highlighted.

Starting Finance on Instagram recall how Berlusconi was the owner and president of Milan for 31 years, from 1986 to 2017, and after a short break he completed the takeover of Monza in autumn of 2018.
However, his passion for football cost him a lot as he spent around €993m on the Rossoneri. It is investment that didn’t translate into profit as Milan closed with a positive balance for only one year, in 2006, with cumulative losses of €857m.
However, the money he put in did bring about a lot of sporting glory as Berlusconi’s reign produced 29 trophies including eight Scudetto and five Champions Leagues.
Berlusconi sold the club to Chinese businessman YongHong Li in 2017, collecting over €600m from the sale and managing to cover almost all the losses he had accumulated over the years (around €700m).
