Thauvin lifts lid on failed move: “My future was supposed to be at Milan”

Florian Thauvin was heavily linked with a move to AC Milan last summer and now the winger has lifted the lid on why it did not happen in the end.

Thauvin spoke during an interview with Canal+ about the experience that he is having at Tigres so far and he was asked about the rumours that he was in fact close to joining the Rossoneri.

“My future was supposed to be at Milan, but they didn’t know the budget for next season, they didn’t know if they would be in the Champions League and they had important players to renew,” he said (via SempreMilan.it).

“For this they asked me for time. When we got to April, however, I didn’t want to wait any longer.”

The players that he is referring to with regards to renewals are likely to be Hakan Calhanoglu and Gianluigi Donnarumma, who ended up leaving the club on a free transfer for Inter and PSG respectively anyway.

In the end Thauvin chose to leave Europe complete and try a new experience in Mexico with his friend and compatriot Andre-Pierre Gignac, joining Tigres, while Milan find themselves looking for a new player in the right wing role to try to raise the quality level of the squad.
