Thauvin lifts lid on failed move: “My future was supposed to be at Milan”

By Oliver Fisher -

Florian Thauvin was heavily linked with a move to AC Milan last summer and now the winger has lifted the lid on why it did not happen in the end.

Thauvin spoke during an interview with Canal+ about the experience that he is having at Tigres so far and he was asked about the rumours that he was in fact close to joining the Rossoneri.

“My future was supposed to be at Milan, but they didn’t know the budget for next season, they didn’t know if they would be in the Champions League and they had important players to renew,” he said (via SempreMilan.it).

“For this they asked me for time. When we got to April, however, I didn’t want to wait any longer.”

The players that he is referring to with regards to renewals are likely to be Hakan Calhanoglu and Gianluigi Donnarumma, who ended up leaving the club on a free transfer for Inter and PSG respectively anyway.

In the end Thauvin chose to leave Europe complete and try a new experience in Mexico with his friend and compatriot Andre-Pierre Gignac, joining Tigres, while Milan find themselves looking for a new player in the right wing role to try to raise the quality level of the squad.

  1. So those two snakes, Dollarumma and Turkish Kebab both hurt Milan in more than one way. If they had stated earlier that they were leaving, Milan will probably have had better fire power on the right wing.

    1. Milan has had a need of a right winger for 3 years. Gigio & Hakan staying or leaving had nothing to do with Milan not signing a RW. Plus Thauvin was a free agent, probably with no more than 3m a year salary. Salary of 3 mil that Milan is paying to Florenzi, on top of paying Crotone 2.5mil for the loan of Messias + his salary. It was just a bad transfer window by Maldini, he is reactive instead of being proactive

  2. With all due respect i get why he would want to have his future sorted out beforehand of the next season but the fact that he chose to play in the mexican league and from the looks of it not even doing very well pretty much indicates that we dodged a bullet here.

    1. I have watched Tigres vs Bayern a few years ago and they barely lost against them. I don’t think pre-Ibra Milan would beat them, soooo…

      1. Well Tgres is doing very well in the league but that isnt the point here as he isnt impressing from the looks of his stats and that while performing in a lesser league than both the french and italian leagues so yeah i believe we actually dodged a bullet here …

  3. Wow! Well I understand him honestly, if I was him I wouldn’t appreciate it of my importance was tied to the availability or unavailability of another.

  4. Went for money plain and simple. He’s the highest paid player in the Mexican league around 5.5mil plus bonuses. There isn’t a large number of French players in that league..only Gignac comes to mind so it’s not like he went due to history/precedent

  5. He choose money than career. He is getting almost 6m euro nett/ season at Tigres while AC Milan only offer him 3-3,5m euro nett/season. I think we just lucky Dodge a bullet like we did from belotti in the past when that stupid CEO and DS Fassone & mirabelli bid 60m euro for belotti but Urbano Cairo ( Torino president) rejected their offer .
