AC Milan are patiently but also nervously awaiting Luka Modric’s decision regarding his future beyond the current 2025-26 season.

Modric’s impact at Milan cannot be overstated. During his pre-Udinese press conference on the eve of the game, Massimiliano Allegri was asked about coaching the Croatian and whether it will be a main memory from his coaching career.
“I’ll just say one thing: all the champions I’ve coached, when I talk about them I always get emotional. It’s exciting to still see the videos of their technical feats, that’s the beauty of it. Without that, football isn’t playing,” he said.
Optimism growing
According to today’s edition of La Repubblica (via MilanPress), Modric has not yet made his final choice regarding 2026-27, but there is cautious optimism in the Rossoneri camp regarding his renewal.
His contract includes an option for the club to extend until June 2027, but the management have always left the decision up to the former Real Madrid star, who now seems inclined to say yes to remaining for another year.
The newspaper then discusses the conditions needed to secure a renewal . The first is qualification for next season’s Champions League, given that the 40-year-old would like to finish playing in top-flight European football with the Milan crest on his chest.
The second is the guarantee of a ‘high-quality squad’: Modric is a winner and wants his Milan to have a chance to compete, so he will also discuss this with the club at the end of the season.
The final one is Massimiliano Allegri’s permanence on the bench. This season the two have built an excellent relationship based on dialogue and mutual respect, consequently the Croatian would like him to be the coach next year.
