AC Milan are patiently but also nervously awaiting Luka Modric’s decision regarding his future beyond the current 2025-26 season.

Modric’s impact at Milan cannot be overstated. During his pre-Udinese press conference on the eve of the game, Massimiliano Allegri was asked about coaching the Croatian and whether it will be a main memory from his coaching career.

“I’ll just say one thing: all the champions I’ve coached, when I talk about them I always get emotional. It’s exciting to still see the videos of their technical feats, that’s the beauty of it. Without that, football isn’t playing,” he said.

Optimism growing

According to today’s edition of La Repubblica (via MilanPress), Modric has not yet made his final choice regarding 2026-27, but there is cautious optimism in the Rossoneri camp regarding his renewal.

His contract includes an option for the club to extend until June 2027, but the management have always left the decision up to the former Real Madrid star, who now seems inclined to say yes to remaining for another year.

The newspaper then discusses the conditions needed to secure a renewal . The first is qualification for next season’s Champions League, given that the 40-year-old would like to finish playing in top-flight European football with the Milan crest on his chest.

The second is the guarantee of a ‘high-quality squad’: Modric is a winner and wants his Milan to have a chance to compete, so he will also discuss this with the club at the end of the season.

The final one is Massimiliano Allegri’s permanence on the bench. This season the two have built an excellent relationship based on dialogue and mutual respect, consequently the Croatian would like him to be the coach next year.

  1. Well, to me on a personal level and my individualistic take on the Modric transfer is that he did not visibly upgrade the technicality of the squad, or even if at all there was, it would have been too marginal for me to observe.

I would undoubtedly pass on him.

    1. It’s a matter of square pegs in round holes. Modric could easily have been deployed to add the creative spark in the middle connecting the attack and midfield, but alas he is playing a role which neither benefits his abilities or allows the team make use of other options.

Like you said, the upgrade is hard to see, and that’s the managers fault in my opinion.

      1. Well, I think I remember them saying before the start of the season that Modric told the coach that he wants to play in deep.
But, that in itself is understandable considering he’s old and may not have the energy for orchestrating play week in week out hence he gave up his supposed role to Fofana, that’s why you see Fofana always making forward passes and shooting which are clearly no his strong points.

Madrid let Modric leave for a reason, he’s contract should not be renewed.

  2. The most impactful player is no doubt Rabiot. What I don’t understand about this management is the lack of ideas and planning.

They signed Modric, Ricci and wasted 45m on Jashari. In totally they spent 75m on 2 players that are not starters ALL because these 3 players play in the same position.

It doesn’t get any dumber than this for me. We could invested some of that money in getting Ederson from Atalanta. Now they are chasing Goretzka ?

Jashari wasn’t needed. Neither was Ricci. They did the same foolishness with spending 40m on Nkunku who by the way is better as a left winger than a striker.

They are wasting money on players we don’t need and players who don’t fit. Now they want to sign Lewandowski who is passed his prime instead of investing in Retegui.

Retegui has proven that he is equally good at scoring with both feet and his head and he proved that in Serie A at Atalanta.

  3. Sorry Luka but if losing Allegri means losing Luka too I’ll take it. Remember he’s a Real Madrid & Croatia legend, not a Milan one.

  4. I will like Modric to extend his contract cos he’s way better than the younger ones who are inconsistent week in week out and always at risk in losing them because of injury which at his age (40+) he raring do that and he always motivate the players with his work effort giving the midfield more balance. His experience will add up to our UCL next season is I don’t see Jashari or Ricci doing that any time soon
