In the last few days, Rafael Leao has been linked with a move to Chelsea. It seemed appropriate, therefore, that the English side were drawn into the same Champions League group as AC Milan last night.

Leao was one of the key players for Milan last season and work is underway with regard to his contract. The renewal is proving to be quite difficult, though, due to the high demands of the Portuguese winger and his agent Jorge Mendes.
As highlighted by Tuttosport (via SempreMilan.it), Leao will indeed play the Champions League in London this season, but with the Milan shirt. The transfer rumours have added fuel to what always was going to be an interesting clash against Chelsea.
Besides, the €150m clause that Milan always have referred to can no longer be triggered. Only in July can a club use the clause, which is a way for the Rossoneri to protect themselves from losing a key player late in the transfer window.
As for the renewal, there is no doubt that Milan’s new owner Gerry Cardinale will be a key to the negotiations. The current deal will expire in 2024 and Leao is asking for €7m per year to renewal, while the Rossoneri are currently at €4.5m.
The change of ownership could thus be a blessing for Milan as Cardinale is expected to slightly raise the economic investment (compared to Elliott).
