Mirante joined Milan in the middle of the 2021/22 season but has only made one official appearance for the Rossoneri; a one-minute cameo against Hellas Verona this past term. In short, he has indeed been a backup.
As mentioned, he looked destined to leave the Rossoneri this summer but according to Tuttosport (via MilanNews), he could renew his contract with the club. A third choice is needed behind Marco Sportiello and Mirante, with his experience, is an important player for the group.
The 39-year-old is already on a very low salary and it could perhaps be lowered further. From a financial point of view, he’s probably the best third choice out there for Milan, who don’t want to have one of their talents in the spot (no playing time).
