‘Final choice will certainly end up being worse’ – Marca attack Milan over Lopetegui saga

By Oliver Fisher -

Spanish newspaper Marca have attacked AC Milan for their handling of the negotiations with Julen Lopetegui and their decision to do a U-turn on hiring him.

Marca (via Radio Rossonera) have strongly criticised the choice of the Rossoneri management, stating that their actions are not those of a club that wants to live up to its proud history and instead one that ‘lives on its past’.

The newspaper underlines that ‘the summers in which Berlusconi collected cracks [top players] with his chequebook are over’, just as the league titles and Champions League trophies are far away.  The criticism is aimed at the decision to end the negotiations with Lopetegui ‘with the draft contract on the table’.

Marca add that ‘it is not typical of such a big club to give in to the blackmail of a handful of signatures [referring to the petition], as if now the fans were to say that a glorious team does not deserve a coach like Lopetegui or that Julen’s arrival could threaten their historical legacy’.

The report states that ‘Milan lives on its past’ and adds that ‘only Conte and Sarri have a better CV at club level than that of Lopetegui… for Milan the final choice will certainly end up being worse than Julen’.

According to the latest from Fabrizio Romano, Lopetegui has agreed terms with West Ham to become new head coach replacing David Moyes from next season.

  1. Future will prove if they are right or wrong. With Conceicao or Fonseca this will probably be proved right. With Motta or de Zerbi I don’t think so.

  2. Objectively he is not a bad coach, maybe a bit weak on the mental side.
I‘d prefer him to Fonseca and at least on paper to Van Bommel.

  3. Well tbh we had way worst with Pioli appointment back then. But the management proved Pioli was the right man. Yes, was. If the current management really see something in Lopetegui that fans don’t see, just go with it. What we can see is that they don’t really believe on their own choice.

The problem is that we’re at the crossroads. Whether we’re be able to enter the winning circle, or back to being mediocre all over again. That’s why many fans are far more sensitive this time around. And from what I’ve been seeing thru multiple platforms, seems like the majority chose Conte (even the Curva sud).

A logical choice as he’s a free agent, it’s indeed a rare chance for coach his calibre. And many believe he’s got the right ingredient to start our winning cycle again.

    1. ’’the management proved Pioli was the right man’’

Hahahaha this is a joke. Pioli is the worst decision we made in decades.
Without Ibra Pioli was getting hammered 5-0 by Atalanta.

      1. So winning Scudetto, qualifying to CL and improving players like Ronali, Kessie, Leao and many others is not enough.

It is time to change but Pioli has been a great coach compared with where the team was when he came and where it is now.

      2. So Pioli is worse than Pippo, Brocchi, Seedorf, Gattuso, Leonardo, Giampaolo, Montella? Lol 😂 thanks for the chuckle today 😁

  4. The funny thing no one even knows anything. Media ran with it and so did every other gullible person. Don’t believe it til something comes from an actual Milan employee or an official statement.
Milan is a media favorite cause people eat it up, every transfer window we are linked with 500 players, no difference now with a coach. Relax

  5. Beside Motta, no one of the currently suggested candidates is better than Lopetegui unless you are delusional and you think Milan will hire a CL winner like Klopp or Tuchel.

  6. People need to stop with this De Zerbi nonsense. He’s been terrible with Brighton and has suffered heavy beatings this season including being completely outcoached by De Rossi. You’d swear he’s won something but all he’s done is get embarrassed this season, by making incorrect purchases and playing dreadful football. Brighton went from competing in Europe to bottom half of the premier league table which is pretty much terrible because everyone outside of City, Arsenal and Liverpool have been a shambles this season. He sounds like Marco Giampaolo 2.0. Remember how people raved about him and then we were off to the worst start in our history.
