MN: Defence, midfield and attack – Milan’s current ideas ahead of the winter mercato

By Ben Dixon -

The winter mercato opens in less than two weeks, and AC Milan has concreted their plans for the market. Additionally, the club has solidified the targets they will aim for, in defence and attack.

Recent reports have suggested that the Rossoneri will work to bring in three players throughout the window. Milan is aware of the need for reinforcements in the window and will act upon this.

MilanNews has written that the club’s priority in January is a central defender. The club had planned to bring Jakub Kiwior in, and the Polish centre-back was the favoured option for some time. However, these plans have stalled, and this now looks unlikely

It now means that Milan will look to bring in Clement Lenglet, the Frenchman who is on loan at Aston Villa. However, a lack of minutes means he is likely to leave the club in January. His parent club, Barcelona, are not opposed to a move to Milan.

Talks are still ongoing with Juan Miranda as well. The Spaniard’s contract expires in June, and whilst talks of a January arrival have occurred, it seems an arrival in the summer will be more likely.

The report also states that the recent injury Tommaso Pobega has suffered and Ismael Bennacer’s likely departure to represent Algeria at the African Cup Of Nations may not affect any plans for any incoming players. Instead, Rade Krunic’s potential move to Fenerbahce may be frozen, to ensure the Rossoneri have midfield cover.

In attack, the likeliness of a move for Jonathan David is fading. Lille’s €40million price tag is an off-putting factor for the club, and as a result, they will shift their focus to Serhou Guirassy. The Guinean striker is much more feasible, given his €17m release clause. Furthermore, Akor Adams of Montpellier remains an option.

  1. All of the injured players will be back either in January or February.
    In the meantime:
    Simic for the defense,Pellegrino too.
Kevin Zeroli for the midfield, maybe even Eletu.
No need for striker. You can sign 3 of them and Pioli will still play Giroud 90 minutes every 3 days.
Outside of buying young talents for the future, or maybe loans, Milan shouldn’t buy anyone this January until they figure out who their coach is going to be next season.

    1. Given we are out of CL and should make top 4 comfortably enough it’s a great season to blood some of our brilliant youngsters. That would make the season a success in my view.
I also think its the best way to encourage our big stars like Mike, Theo and Leao. If they see we have hot young talent coming through it would be a huge help.

Our star men will have a choice to make this summer, as will the club.
No doubt they will have offers

    2. Simic – Heck yeah.
Pellegrino – Heck no – remember his outing was terrible. Let’s ease him in for the ends of game.

Striker – I’d like to see more of Jovic now that he is clearly fit (or more fit anyway). So agree. I also feel a bit of the same frustration that Giroud not only starts every game but often plays far too long. Kamarda would be great to see at the end of some games too. Columbo looked good against us last week and will return in the summer.

I don’t get the midfield thing – Rienjders, RLC, Krunic, Musah. Puli could drop in if necessary opening a spot for Chuk. Seems better to hoard the money for a true impact player in the summer?

  2. Might as well go for Weifer for 15M, a CB on loan like Kiwior (no deadwood like Lenglet) and a Theo backup. We will be good to go with this.

  3. The reason pioli plays Giroud is simple he is the best centre forward we have ..on top of that his form is pretty good ..Giroud has the experience,,and understanding how to play to benefit his team .
He has 8 goals in the leauge and four assists.
To be honest I also think jovic is a good alternative to have . I think we are going to go on a good run of results in the leauge…. We have been very unlucky with injuries this season ,,,but despite that we have done remarkably well ..I also have faith in our coach pioli ..Some have said the Europa league is poor ,,I don’t agree with that ..there are some good teams around including Liverpool,…We are in it to win it .
We are in a good position also in the league ,,3rd at the moment ..So in a good position to qualify again for the champions league next season..
So not a bad season so far !
