Pioli insists Milan ‘need to build on that second half’ to stand a chance vs. Inter – video

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli believes his side must ‘build on the second half’ performance against Inter if they are to stand a chance of reaching the final.

The first 11 minutes was a nightmare for Milan as they conceded twice, and from there they looked all over the shop with Inter wasting multiple chances to put the tie to bed before a quarter of it had been played.

There was a second half recovery in energy and overall play from Milan, and though it was not enough to yield a goal Pioli told Milan TV that he thinks it is something to build from.

“Of course we didn’t want to start like that, but they were more precise technically, better at winning the duels and second balls, and conceding two quick goals obviously caused us problems,”

“We reacted well. We played well in the second half, but just couldn’t get that goal which would have given us a boost to try and turn it around.

“Honestly, it’s not that we wanted to just hold on at 2-0. We wanted to score and take control of the game. We had the chances to get back into it.

“We absolutely need to build on that second half. Of course, we need to put in a performance with more quality, care, everything.

“If we want to turn it around, and I think we have a chance, we have to play much better. We’re disappointed because we wanted a different performance, and a different result. We didn’t get that, but that should help us to find the determination and desire that we need for the comeback.

“Serie A is important, as is the Champions League, so I’ll try to make better choices so that we play better and win against Spezia and then try to come back from this result.”

  1. Second half was only possible because Inter lead 2-0. You think they would be playing the same way if the score was level? The second half performance doesn’t say much. The first 15 minutes say it all.

  2. I had enough with this guy,I always defended him and gave him credit when many people trashed him but with all his lately declarations he looks more and more like an idiot. He said that he knows what he was doing when this team looks like a f joke, for him now second half looks succesufull when the team had no idea what they were doing…I seen so many people saying Tonali had a good game, dude check the first half and see his position…he was fukin nowhere, instead of keeping his position and close that gap infrotn of the defence that you could see from Mars…Calabria said there is nothing to be done,as Dzeko is bigger than him…is he an idiot or is he trying to tell us that someone made him mark Dzeko?!!These people look more and more idiotic with every single day…the results of the football games and sports in general are decided way before the game(cause politics, power, bookies, money, mainly a type of prostitution) but boys please be more original,we had enough with all these fake injuries and with so many idiotic plays from tomori, kjaer, calabria, tonali etc…find some different scenarios at least,we are getting bored

  3. We recovered well in the second half I must say. There was period where we completely dominated, winning balls back quickly. Only thing missing was the goal. And I’m quite sure if Bennacer and Leao were there, the game would have been different. I’m just glad we didn’t concede more tbh. I was hoping for that whistle. It gave us a fighting chance in the return leg. And if it’s one thing that Inter can also do is crumble. They start well but they finish poorly.

  4. You don’t need to “build” on anything. You need to play like men who want to win the game more than inter and have more desire and win the 50/50s. Then you need to set up the team tactically better (no more of our smallest players marking their biggest players on corners, and no more terrible positioning from our CBs when under pressure… this needs to be drilled prior to the game Pioli..).

  5. Maybe these are my last kicks guys, but whenever this guy has always had his back to the wall, somehow he pulls out a rabbit.
When we’re at our lowest point and swearing at him(justified) he somehow finds something, whatever that something is.
Embarrassing first half, but as we all know for the past 3 years, this team thrives on the underdog status and there’s never been a time where the whole world has written us off more than this.

I have a shred of hope, this is your absolute last chance Mister! Go out and show us.

  6. I can’t understand if this man is really delusional or acts like one. He has bought so many players and yet 80% are just mediocre and useless. There are no tactics in his way of playing and the players always look confused, without any plan.
Whether we like it or not, there is only one way of success for clubs like Milan. We need owners that will spend money, we need to buy a top class coach and of course top class players. This is how this club created it’s legacy and that’s how we going to add more on it.
