AC Milan’s hopes of signing Matija Popovic from Partizan Belgrade seem to have taken a fresh blow amid complications around his non-EU status and interest from Manchester City.
As has been reported by Matteo Moretto and Fabrizio Romano, the 17-year-old striker may not be destined for Milan after all.
It seemed that the deal was in place for Popovic to arrive in Italy during the January transfer window, but Milan are now unsure about using their only remaining non-EU registration slot on him.
One solution Milan have suggested is that he signs for Monza but later joins Milan at the end of the season, but that seems like an unlikely solution at this time.
To add even more complications, Premier League and Champions League winners Manchester City have shown interest in Popovic and are now negotiating with the player, who is out of contract with Partizan at the end of the season.
Last time I checked Serbia is part of EU so… Whats the issue?
No, that is not true.
I don’t even remember them ever being part of EU. They did apply in 2009 and are in negotiation since 2012.
Did our management think until now that Serbia was part of the EU? 🤦♂️
I doubt that. More likely all the injuries have forced them to reevaluate if it would be wise to use that one slot on a striker who’s likely not even ready for first team minutes.
I don’t understand this.
You go to all of the effort to talk a prodigious talent into signing and then change your mind?
I thought these people are supposed to have thought out plans?
Maybe Jovic could get played when Giroud is moving like he is in a wheel chair so we don’t need to panic buy a striker?
Management basically unsure if to go with David or him due to the non EU limit. Knowing how poorly we use young strikers, i could see why they got cold feet
