Athletic: Milan CEO Furlani has ‘tried to correct the errors made this time last year’

Divock Origi could be ‘one and done’ at AC Milan as the management look to offload him before the window closes, according to a report.

The Athletic’s James Horncastle recall that Origi has gone from being ‘cult hero’ at Liverpool to being ‘underwhelming’ at Milan, having scored just twice in his first season at the club despite a high salary.

Origi arrived with a known injury problem and that disrupted his preseason preparations, but in October he did mark his first start with a goal against Monza. The faith put in him by Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara was ultimately not repaid though.

Horncastle adds that ‘little focus has been given to the work of chief executive Giorgio Furlani’ who has ‘overseen a clear-out’ and ‘tried to correct the errors made this time last year’.

He secured the club-record sale of Sandro Tonali to Newcastle and didn’t panic after Brahim Diaz’s return to Real Madrid. Ante Rebic left for Besiktas, Junior Messias for Genoa and Charles De Ketelaere is at Atalanta.

Ciprian Tatarusanu moved to Saudi Arabia on a free transfer, Zlatan Ibrahimovic retired, Matteo Gabbia is on a season-long loan deal at Villarreal and Daniel Maldini is at Empoli.

Now, the aim is to find a solution for Origi who has rejected Saudi interest for now. Lorenzo Colombo could be loaned out too, but he will be replaced not by Origi but a new signing.
