Calhanoglu: “Of course it is my goal to play for Bayern or Dortmund”

AC Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has revealed his openness at the idea of moving to Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund in the future.

The Turkey international was strongly linked with an exit over the summer, even reportedly rejecting an offer from Fenerbahce, while il Corriere dello Sport stated that talks between Milan and Torino were ‘intensifying’ over a potential deal.

An update from Calciomercato.com last month claimed that new head coach Stefano Pioli is likely to focus on Lucas Paqueta for the position in left central midfield, and as such Calhanoglu could be sold in January, though he has been playing as a left winger.

Calhanoglu gave an interview to SportBild during which he discussed the idea of a potential return to the Bundesliga.

“I grew up in Germany. Even though I enjoy being able to talk to the people in Italian in the meantime – I do not like the German language very much,” he said.

“And from a sporting point of view: Of course it is my goal to play for Bayern, Dortmund or another big club in Germany.

He also revealed that Bayern were interested when he moved from Hamburger SV to Bayer Leverkusen.

“It was a big sign that Bayern wanted me. But at that time Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry occupied the wingers. I’m not saying I would not grab it there, but it would have been hard.

“If Bayern comes back to me at some point, then I certainly do not say no. But I still have Leverkusen in my heart. Bayer is always my home.”
