Many assumed that after AC Milan’s spending in the summer, they could be leading the race for the Scudetto. However, sitting eight points behind Inter, their activity has faced scrutiny.
After spending more than €110million, expectations were clear, especially with the club moving in the direction of investing in youthful talents that are near the standard demanded to pull on the Rossoneri shirt.
Whilst Tijjani Reijnders and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have impressed so far, Fabio Capello believes that in the upcoming transfer window, the club needs to be wiser in their spending.
Capello spoke in his column for La Gazzetta dello Sport about the past window, offering some advice for the upcoming mercato.
“The summer transfer campaign was crucial, but perhaps some errors of judgment were made in the planning phase.
“What I hope is that the goals of the winter market are up to the Rossoneri’s standards. Adjusting things in the running only makes sense if you raise the level,” he stated.
The club has already identified the need for defensive reinforcements in the upcoming window, with an already decimated defence now without Pierre Kalulu after his injury.
Additionally, there is the desire to add another forward to their ranks. The club has been linked heavily with Jonathan David, Serhou Guirassy, and Akor Adams.
Whilst Milan has a mountain to climb to catch Inter, Capello admitted they are not out of the race just yet, as long as their winter investments are of Rossoneri calibre: “If the managers work in this direction [investing in Milan-level quality], Milan will be able to make up ground and become more competitive.”
