Colombo’s time with Empoli started well but gradually declined from there. He did rack up six goals in 37 appearances, but the Tuscan club suffered relegation to Serie B. Thus, they will not use their option to buy him, and he will return to Milan.

The 23-year-old has posted a message on his Instagram account to thank the Azzurri and the club’s fans for his time there.

“It’s not easy to find the words after such an intense and, unfortunately, painful season. We gave everything until the end, with heart and soul, but we were unable to reach the goal we had set ourselves.

“I want to thank my teammates, a great group with whom I shared every battle. Coach D’Aversa, the staff, the club that made me feel at home from day one, and above all you fans, always present with affection and passion.

Empoli was an important stage in my journey. The regret for how it ended is great, but I leave this shirt with gratitude and respect. Thank you for everything, Empoli.”
