Diario AS: Atletico Madrid left surprised by Morata’s exit – the reason

Atletico Madrid have been left somewhat surprised by Alvaro Morata’s decision to leave the club and the way it was handled, according to a report.

According to Diario AS (via MilanNews), uuntil yesterday, Morata had not informed Atletico Madrid of his desire to move to Milan at any point prior to when he was essentially cleaning out his locker.

It was 15:00 CEST in the afternoon when the Spanish striker sent a message to Miguel Ángel Gil – the club CEO – and director Carlos Bucero asking to meet them.

He wanted them to be the first to know that he was leaving. The meeting took place at the Wanda Metropolitano, the stadium that was Morata’s home for years, and his decision was met with surprise by the Atleti management.

Despite the doubts expressed in various interviews in the last week of 2024 European Championship, neither Morata nor his entourage had informed the club that he would leave and thus they feel it was sprung upon them to an extent.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed earlier today that the 31-year-old has completed his medical and is now set to sign as a new Milan player on a deal until June 2028, after the €13m release clause in his contract with Atletico was triggered by the Rossoneri.
