Diario AS: Atletico Madrid left surprised by Morata’s exit – the reason

By Oliver Fisher -

Atletico Madrid have been left somewhat surprised by Alvaro Morata’s decision to leave the club and the way it was handled, according to a report.

According to Diario AS (via MilanNews), uuntil yesterday, Morata had not informed Atletico Madrid of his desire to move to Milan at any point prior to when he was essentially cleaning out his locker.

It was 15:00 CEST in the afternoon when the Spanish striker sent a message to Miguel Ángel Gil – the club CEO – and director Carlos Bucero asking to meet them.

He wanted them to be the first to know that he was leaving. The meeting took place at the Wanda Metropolitano, the stadium that was Morata’s home for years, and his decision was met with surprise by the Atleti management.

Despite the doubts expressed in various interviews in the last week of 2024 European Championship, neither Morata nor his entourage had informed the club that he would leave and thus they feel it was sprung upon them to an extent.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed earlier today that the 31-year-old has completed his medical and is now set to sign as a new Milan player on a deal until June 2028, after the €13m release clause in his contract with Atletico was triggered by the Rossoneri.

  1. So the guys were surprised that someone would pay 13M€ for this guy haha they held him in high esteem. Either they attended the same clown school than our management where they learned monitoring, either they were fine losing him for 13M€. But what’s not good enough for Chelsea or Atletico is great for this Milan.

    1. Not one thing positive to say about anything and just wrong as ever. He’s off one of his best seasons ever and playing a key part in Spain. Atletico wasn’t informed in advanced of him leaving.

Again, one of the best goal scoring seasons ever for Atletico. They were just surprised he agreed to leave. That’s all.

      1. That’s because I have nothing positive to write about regarding Milan these days. Anyway it’s divergence of opinions. I know you’re Spanish, I understand that you probably like Morata and he’s a good player but he’s like Giroud and he’s not the killer we are waiting for a few years. It’s like Fonseca, not bad but not the best, and it aligns with the ambition of the club.

What I was writing is that the management at Atletico didn’t suddenly discover that release clause, they knew about it and didn’t try to negotiate with Morata so it seems that they were fine with 13M€ for him. They probably know that they can find an upgrade at striker over Morata, something that our management doesn’t understand.

        1. That’s because you’re wrong a lot. A great deal. On many things. Morata is a great player, and is off one of his best seasons.

The media tends to write a lot of spin and you tend to run with it every single time. They try to stir up drama and problems.

        2. Maybe that’s all Alvaro would agree to. By rule all La Liga players must have a release clause, but they have to agree to the amount like everything in the contract.
The players have all the power, the team can ask, but that’s all they can do, ask.
