Coming into the game the Milan knew that a win would be enough to not only get themselves into the knockout stages but also to take a big step towards finishing top of the group given Salzburg and Chelsea play each other in the other game.

Before the match in Croatian striker Jordan Longhi had played just 325 minutes with Milan Primavera averaging a goal every 65 minutes, and he got the scoring underway with a right-footed finish after a nice run and feed from Simic.

The home side equalised within a few minutes through Sakota and the game seemed to be heading for a draw until the 77th minute, when a foul inside the box gave Gabriele Alesi the chance to make it 2-1 from the penalty spot, one that he seized to win the game for his team.

With Salzburg winning the other game 4-1 against Chelsea it means that they are in the driving seat to reach the last 16, but if Milan win against the Austrians next week and Dinamo beat Chelsea they will be out.
