The contracts of Franck Kessie and Alessio Romagnoli will expire at the end of the season and it looks like AC Milan could lose them for free. This is something that club legend Roberto Donadoni has weighed in on.
The former midfielder and current manager was interviewed by Gazzetta Dello Sport and among other things, he was asked about the expiring contracts. He stated that it would be a shame to lose the players but also highlighted Milan’s strength.
“The club has behaved consistently, but for an agreement it takes two. It’s clear that not monetizing such important players [also referring to Gigio and Hakan also] would be a real shame at a cash level. While on a technical level, it cannot be denied that Milan have, for example, replaced Gigio in a great way with Maignan and is in the same position as last year,” he stated as cited by MilanNews.
As was pointed out in his response, though, there is no doubt that Milan could have sold them both for a decent amount of money. Hefty contracts are important investments, though, which has to be considered.
Most of the time when a player leaves for free, the biggest difficulty lies in finding a new player that doesn’t cost too much (transfer fee) and doesn’t have a huge salary. As with Maignan, it was cheaper to sign him than to renew Donnarumma.
