Just over five minutes before the break in the game at the Stadion Maksimir last night, Milan got themselves in front and it came from a rare set piece goal. A perfect free-kick delivery from Sandro Tonali around 30 yards out was met by the run of Gabbia who headed past Livakovic to score his first ever goal for Milan.
Rafael Leao would add a second, Olivier Giroud netted from the penalty spot – just as he did in the game at San Siro – to make it 3-0, and then an own-goal rounded off the scoring as Milan now just need a draw against Red Bull Salzburg to qualify.
Gabbia spoke to Sky Italia after the game to reveal his emotions after what was a very special moment for him on a special night for the team, with his comments relayed by MilanNews and translated below.
“This evening will remain etched in my mind. It is the second goal of my career after the one in Serie C with Lucchese, let’s say it was a different evening,” he said.
“I remember when I was on the other side and celebrated as a fan for Milan’s goals. I was a fan, I was at San Siro and today a great dream that has come true for me.”
Gabbia also spoke to Infinity: “I’m happy, it was an important evening. I’m happy to have found my first goal. These are three fundamental points, also not conceding a goal because it is important for us defenders to not concede goals in the Champions League.”
