GdS: Compactness and double teaming – Pioli expected to change approach vs. Napoli

A Sunday night in Naples is a tough proposition for any team, but especially an AC Milan side that come into the game having lost their last two and at risk of having a nightmare week.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) write that Milan will board the plane tomorrow at 10am with the tension of someone who has made mistakes twice. Closing the Juve-PSG-Napoli trio of games without points would open the doors to a week of criticism.

Stefano Pioli will ask his starters to help reverse the current struggles. Compared to the PSG-Milan lineup, there is only one guaranteed change: Thiaw is disqualified, Kalulu is expected in his place, favoured over Kjaer, with Calabria on the right

First, however, the big theme of the week: the tactical approach. Calabria caused some discussion for his post-PSG statements and, even if there was a lot of talk about the phrases on commitment (which Pioli didn’t like), the considerations that remain in mind are those on Pioli’s choices.

“We were perhaps so unbalanced, we accepted a match of one-on-ones,” he said. Pioli did an initial part of tactical preparation with the team yesterday, but he will decide today on the specific instructions.

Will he ask for more caution? He will certainly try to keep the team closer, more compact, perhaps attacking less and easy double teaming Kvara, because committing the same errors for the third time in a week would cause uproar.
