GdS: Donnarumma’s departure from Milan almost a certainty – the reasons

Today’s declarations by Gazzetta Dello Sport leave little doubt: Gianluigi Donnarumma is destined to leave AC Milan. Although it would be far from ideal for the Rossoneri, the situation appears inevitable to date.

As the newspaper states (via Milanlive.it), there are no margins for a contract renewal, nor can they continue together, as Milan then would lose him for free in the summer of 2021. Therefore, inevitable, a departure will take place after the season.

In 2017, when the parties were in a similar situation, Donnarumma’s love for the club prevailed as an agreement eventually was found. However, there is no basis for history to repeat itself, despite the emotional bond.

Destined to replace Gianluigi Buffon in the Italian national team, the youngster can no longer stay in a club with limited ambitions. Especially if his economic demands are questioned by the club management.

Elliott want to renew the contract, but only on their terms. That is, reducing the salary and perhaps spreading it over multiple years. Unthinkable scenario for Raiola, but a duty for the club that have decided to drastically lower the wage bill.

Furthermore, as previously mentioned, Milan are no longer at the top. Once again, they are heading towards the umpteenth revolution to reach the Champions League. For Donnarumma, it might not be enough.
