GdS: Guida makes several big calls during Milan-Roma – the verdict

AC Milan got the job done in front of their own fans last night, beating Roma 3-1 at San Siro to open up a nine-point gap to the team in fifth place.

Yacine Adli, Olivier Giroud and Theo Hernandez all got their names on the scoresheet in what was a dominant victory, although Leandro Paredes’ spot kick to halve the deficit in the second half did provoke memories of the 2023 collapse in the same fixture.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) have analysed the major refereeing decisions made during last night’s game. The first case examined is the contact in the Roma area in the 38th minute of the first half between Kristensen and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The paper remark that there was indeed contact, so Loftus-Cheek’s appeals for a spot kick to be given can be understood, but it was very light contact and thus it was correct not to give it even if the Roma defender took a big risk.

The Giallorossi appealed en masse for Olivier Giroud’s goal to be ruled our for a foul by Christian Pulisic on Cristante. However, La Gazzetta writes that their protests rightly fell on deaf ears as the American did not go out of his way to impede the midfielder.

Finally, there is no doubt about the penalty awarded to Roma: Davide Calabria’s challenge on Paredes resulted in clear contact and it was inside the box.
