GdS: New Milan, old problems – summer signings struggle in derby against Inter

The help of the new signings was not enough for AC Milan as they lost the derby 5-1 against Inter last night. As stated in today’s papers, they simply cracked under the derby pressure.

Stefano Pioli and his men got back into the game with the 2-1 goal from Rafael Leao, but just ten minutes later it was 3-1 and game over. Throughout the game, though, it was clear that the new signings struggled.

As highlighted by Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan), they have now adapted to tradition: Inter are superior in the derby. It was a somewhat new Milan but the same old problem remained, in other words.

Tijjani Reijnders had done well up until the derby but struggled in the midfield battle, not finding space in between and lacking the vision to track back when needed. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, meanwhile, lost too many duels despite his size.

Finally, Christian Pulisic also struggled big time. He didn’t even attempt a single shot and was also very shy on the ball. In short, he added nothing to the attack and Pioli will be hoping for a different Pulisic next week.
