GdS: New Milan, old problems – summer signings struggle in derby against Inter

By Isak Möller -

The help of the new signings was not enough for AC Milan as they lost the derby 5-1 against Inter last night. As stated in today’s papers, they simply cracked under the derby pressure.

Stefano Pioli and his men got back into the game with the 2-1 goal from Rafael Leao, but just ten minutes later it was 3-1 and game over. Throughout the game, though, it was clear that the new signings struggled.

As highlighted by Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan), they have now adapted to tradition: Inter are superior in the derby. It was a somewhat new Milan but the same old problem remained, in other words.

Tijjani Reijnders had done well up until the derby but struggled in the midfield battle, not finding space in between and lacking the vision to track back when needed. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, meanwhile, lost too many duels despite his size.

Finally, Christian Pulisic also struggled big time. He didn’t even attempt a single shot and was also very shy on the ball. In short, he added nothing to the attack and Pioli will be hoping for a different Pulisic next week.

  1. nah new signings are fine
its just we are not ready tactically against inter. first goal was a foul on theo, second goal was magic from thuram. 3,4,5 are tactical problem.
Pioli need to step up tactical games especially against big teams. there are normal tactics to beat up every day teams then advanced tactics to beat strong teams. Still think Pioli is good coach, but can improve.
Not suprised with the results, but i can see Milan improving more after this.

    1. They were horrible. Inter gave them the ball and they did NOTHING with it. What is fine exactly? Losing possession 15 times against Inter? Don’t be a coward. I would cancel their contract after that. They will never be good players that can play against top teams, just watch. You think RLC was on the bench because he is world class or because a bunch of managers at Chelsea saw that he isn’t that good in fact? Not a single one but Sarri saw anything good in him.

    2. What r u.talking about.with a foul.u won the Souderton against inter rber the tall French guy.hr found 2 players.and no foul and scored so shut up.u r like juve everything u have u bought but what goes around comes around

  2. These new foreigners don’t know the importance of the derby, they are afterall new to the league. And so they shat their pants the moment they stepped on the field.

No tactics as well, Pioli though he can go and play his cool new inverted fullback 433 system against a quick counter attacking and wide 352 of Inter that Simone polishes for years now.

Arrogant and foolish from Milan. Rightfully dismantled.

  3. Pioli is a disaster.
Fail match up placing Pulisic against Dimarco.
Dimarco is a strong, fast and very physical player against delicate and soft Pulisic there was just no chance.
Also Mr Pioli you have your last line of defence so high up against Inter???
Kjaer and Thiaw played almost at the centre of the pitch when Milan had the ball..How can you intercept fast players like Thuram and Lautaro?
    Easy night for Inzaghi.

    1. Pioli and milan players in the 1st minutes: “Look guys, we’re controlling possession here, we’re gonna destroy them, we’re better than them.”

Inzaghi and inter players: “Let them have the ball, fall into the trap, and let’s eat them”

  4. Thats the problem when you said pioli will be hoping for a different pulisic next week . Milan sign 10 new faces over the summer window . He must know how to rotate the squad and dont let others signing like chukwueze , okafor musah disappear and forget about their own quality !!

  5. Inter looked like real under murinho back then.. tight and clinical af on the counter.. doubt there are a lot of teams that would do better against them last night.
Keep in mind this is the finalist of cl last season, so we could say they’re the second best team of eu right now. Lol

    1. Yes, but Gerry said that he wanted to improve the midfield after he saw how we did against Chelsea. Well, Inter destroyed us even worse than last season, good job!

        1. My thoughts exactly, let chill until mid season b4 we judge the team ,. Mind you I dint see this inter wining all there games and not dropping points too.
