GdS: Pioli’s position not at risk despite derby shambles and Moncada chat

AC Milan’s 5-1 derby defeat against Inter has understandably not gone down well, and now an instant response is needed from Stefano Pioli’s side to stop the latest tide of doubt.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes that Pioli is working at Milanello to reconnect the threads from the first three league games of the season that fell apart on Saturday evening at San Siro.

Christian Pulisic’s imagination and goals, Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s physicality and Tijjani Reijnders’ precision in passing were not evident against the Nerazzurri, and that was among the reasons Milan lost.

The thing that ruined the weekend for the fans was the heated discussions on the relationship between Pioli and the derby. Milan are used to lifting trophies and management the pre and post-derby events in a different way compared to othe rcities.

Losing 5 consecutive derbies, all in 2023, certified Inter’s technical superiority, but more than anything Pioli’s difficulty in dealing with this type of high-octane challenge, in which Inzaghi is a master.

After losing 4, it was expected that he would perhaps adopt more conservative, more prudent choices. Instead he continued with experimentation and it was brutally exposed.

Yesterday at Milanello, Geoffrey Moncada showed up and had a chat with Pioli. The coach’s position is not in question, despite it being realised that the derby loss was unacceptable and all the good work of the first three games was undone.

To find out if the match against Inter was just a bad evening, Milan must react against Newcastle in the Champions League, otherwise the quicksand could stand moving quickly.
