GdS: Possession, prudence and Leao – Fonseca’s plan to bridge the gap with Inter

AC Milan are set to appoint Paulo Fonseca as their new coach and his main job will be to ensure that the Rossoneri close the 19-point gap that now exists between them and Inter.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, there are three main weapons that Fonseca will use as Milan coach to ensure there is a title challenge next season: Prudence, possession and Rafael Leao.

Some fans may feel that signing someone who couldn’t succeed at AS Roma does not represent progress, but Fonseca has shown a different side of his coaching in the last year with Lille.

He has stopped his teams from conceding so many goals, with Lille’s record dropping from 44 to 34, with the goals scored dropping from 65 to 52.

As well as that, Milan will hope to have a lot more possession of the ball than they have done recently with Stefano Pioli. Lille have been second in Ligue 1 for passes completed and sixth for passes into the final third.

Finally, any new coach at Milan has no choice but to get the best out of Leao, who struggled this season. The Portuguese winger can be the best player in Serie A under the right guidance and Fonseca will not succeed if Leao is operating at half-speed again.
