In the second half of the game between Milan and Bologna, Olivier Giroud was brought to the ground and the Rossoneri appealed for a penalty. The referee was right not to award it, though, a report claims.
It was early in the second half, as pointed out by Gazzetta Dello Sport, when Giroud ended up in a duel with Bologna’s Arthur Theate. The latter came from behind and placed his arms around the striker, ‘hugging’ him.
Livio Marinelli, the referee, let play continue and during the next stop, a silent check was conducted with VAR. The latter viewed the situation as the referee, also because these decisions should mainly be taken by the head referee ‘in the moment’.
As the newspaper concludes, the decision was correct in the end as it would have been a generous penalty for Milan. It was dangerous defending by Theate, though, but everything looks worse in slow-motion.
