AC Milan and Inter continue to explore the idea of building new stadiums, but in the meantime the fans are still flocking to San Siro to see their favourite team play.

La Gazzetta dello Sport writes that it doesn’t matter if Inter or Milan are playing at home because San Siro is up there among the stadiums with the best attendance around Europe so far at the beginning of 2024-25.

In the five Serie A matches that Inter and Milan have played at home, over 360,000 fans have passed through the turnstiles of the stadium which means an almost total sell-out in every game.

The trend will be reiterated tonight for Milan-Lecce, when around 70,000. It is not 75,000 only because the away sector will have large empty seats.

Thanks to the victory in Sunday’s derby, the sales rate increase for the Rossoneri has been notable and has confirmed a trend that has been going on for some time.

Even though they share the same stadium, which is not as modern as those built abroad in recent years, the Milanese teams have two of the most loyal fan bases in Europe and the Meazza is still ‘La Scala’ of football.

Inter did not record the first sell-out of 2024-25 in the derby only because of a handful of unsold tickets (75,366 attendees), but they did set a new revenue record in Serie A history, beating the previous one by €1m.

The Nerazzurri have an average of 72,677 spectators in their three home games, while the Rossoneri have had a slightly lower average in their two matches at the Meazza (71,008). Adding together the tickets sold by the two clubs so far, San Siro is the most “attended” stadium in Europe.

What about the future? Milan and Inter are oriented not to renovate the San Siro but could build a new shared home near it or could build separate homes in San Donato (Milan) and Rozzano (Inter).
