Santiago Gimenez has broken his silence after suffering an ankle injury in Mexico’s World Cup elimination against England.

Gimenez sustained the issue in the final seconds of the World Cup last-16 match against the Three Lions. While there is no exact timeline for his return, it is expected that he could even miss the start of the season with Milan.
The former Feyenoord star no doubt has a burning desire to get back to scoring goals, having failed to net a single time in the 2025-26 Serie A campaign and also going dry during the home World Cup with his national team. He will now enjoy a vacation before heading back to Milan for treatment.
Despite this, rumours continue to swirl about his future and a potential sale, which his injury now complicates. He spoke to Mexican media for a post-tournament recap, and his words have been relayed by MilanVibes.

“Very good, thank God, my ankle is getting better.”
After that injury, people created a lot of memes, I don’t know if you’ve seen what’s happening on social media?
“Yes, it was all great fun.”
How do you deal with these kinds of situations, Santi? Because we know you’ve been heavily criticised for not having a good World Cup and, unfortunately, for this injury.
“No, we had a great World Cup. I think we’re proud of it because we gave everything on the pitch. And well, it was a great World Cup, especially because I think the people came together.”
Being in the top 16 teams, I think that says a lot about what you’ve done, right?
“Yes, absolutely, absolutely. We’re very happy, very content, and we aim to do more.”
How do you feel after this result for the national team?
“It wasn’t a failure. I think we did the best we could, and even though we deserved more, I think we made a good impression.”

“We love it, we love it.”

“I like the idea, though.”
