AC Milan’s decision to let Gianluigi Donnarumma walk away for free at the end of his contract is a bold and brave one, but the right one.
Il Giornale (via MilanNews) writes that the Donnarumma saga had already gone on for too long and so Milan – with a ticket for next season’s Champions League in their pocket – decided to take back control and seal a deal for Mike Maignan without waiting for the decision of Donnarumma.
The paper writes how Milan were tired of waiting for Mino Raiola and the Italian goalkeeper who wanted to buy time. The last counter-offer from the agent came before Juventus-Milan at €10m net per season for two years without a release clause and was immediately rejected, with the Rossoneri management not at all keen on the idea of ‘renting’ a keeper for two years.
Milan’s move – effectively dumping Gigio to sign Maignan – displaced Donnarumma and his agent, who will now be forced to find him a team quickly to prevent distractions while the 22-year-old is at the Euros with Italy.
