Milan will take a one-goal advantage to the English capital for the return fixture on March 8 after beating Tottenham 1-0 in the first match at San Siro. The only goal came from Brahim Diaz early on and it could have been an even bigger margin but for late misses, yet there is still a lead for Stefano Pioli’s side to defend.
Spurs may remain the favourites given that there is only a one-goal deficit to overcome and they have world class attacking talent, but there is an extra motivation for the Milan players because getting through the round would not only be very important from a sporting point of view but also from an economic point of view.
According to the Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews), reaching the quarter-final stage of the competition is worth around €20m in revenues. Half is made up of UEFA prize money while the other half is made up by ticket sales, marketing and sponsors.
