Inter’s Calhanoglu on Scudetto derby possibility: “I always wish Milan all the best”

Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has addressed the idea that he and his team-mates could celebrate winning the Scudetto in the derby against his former club AC Milan.

At half-time last night it looked like Inter’s dream of winning the title against Milan on April 22 was fading, but their second-half comeback means it remains a possibility as they won 2-1 against Udinese.

Inter would need to be 16 points ahead of Milan after the derby given that there will be five games left and head-to-head no longer matters, due to there being a play-off in the event of teams finishing on level points.

If things go as they should (Milan beat Sassuolo at the weekend and Inter win against Cagliari at San Siro) the gap would be 13 points. That makes the equation simple: they would seal the Scudetto in the derby if they win.

Speaking to DAZN, Sky Sport and Inter TV, the former Calhanoglu spoke about the relationship with his former team and the possibility that the derby at the end of the month could be decisive.

“I don’t like talking about the past and I don’t want to start a fire, I swear, I want to stay calm. I have an excellent relationship with my former teammates,” he said (via Radio Rossonera).

“I always wish Milan all the best and I also have a good relationship with Maldini and Massara, I wrote them messages when they won [the league]. But the issue with Milan is closed, the book is closed.

“I suffered in silence and I have to say thanks to my wonderful teammates and the Inter fans, who always support us. In football only one wins.

“Winning the Scudetto in the derby doesn’t change anything for me, I’m just happy because it would be my first Scudetto and because for Inter it would mean a second star which would write history.”
