Maldini sheds more light on Milan’s Messi pursuit: “We called, and we tried”

Paolo Maldini has shed a bit more light on his previous comments claiming that he tried to bring Lionel Messi to AC Milan while he was the technical director.

During the live recording of the podcast ‘Poretcast’ earlier this month, Maldini was asked about all things Milan. The former player and director revealed he tried for ten days to sign Messi before deciding that the operation was impossible.

La Gazzetta dello Sport published a follow-up report the next day giving some background on when the Rossoneri were in for the Argentine forward, including Inter’s attempts being a driving force, but then no more information really surfaced.

Today, Maldini did an interview with La Repubblica in which he spoke at length about his exit from Milan at the end of last season, recalling conversations with owner Gerry Cardinale and his work up until that point. He also touched on the Messi topic once again, offering some more details.

“We tried to sign Messi when he was free after Barça when he left the club in August. We called, and we tried, but it remained an idea… just because Leonardo told me PSG were ahead and already in advanced talks to sign Messi,” he said.
