GdS: Inter rumours and a ‘spectacle’ – when Maldini tried to sign Messi

By Oliver Fisher -

Paolo Maldini dropped the bombshell yesterday that he tried for 10 days to bring Lionel Messi to AC Milan, but just when was the attempt made?

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes this morning, Maldini was a guest on ‘PoretCast’, a video podcast created and hosted by the entertainment personality Giacomo Poretti.

During the interview, the former Milan director said something very interesting: “For ten days I tried to bring him [Messi] to Milan, but then we realized that it was impossible.

“I think that a footballer like Messi is a spectacle for everyone, even if it’s late now [in his career], he does things that surprise you every time. When I read that he could go to Inter I was saddened.”

The Inter links he is referring to were back in the summer of 2020, when PPTV – Suning’s Chinese TV – used a shadow of Messi projected on the Duomo in Milano to promote an upcoming game against Napoli.

Maldini was then finishing his first season as a director at Milan, and the paper believes that the attempt to land the Argentine champion occured the following summer, when Messi left his beloved Barcelona but ended up signing an astronomical deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
