According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), the Milan management are prioritising the signing of Charles De Ketelaere and then will turn to recruiting a new centre-back, meaning their pursuit of a new central midfielder could continue into late August, perhaps even with the season having already started.

A lot will depend on how the Renato Sanches soap opera ends because the Portuguese international has now made it clear that he wants to play for PSG who have not yet found an agreement with Lille. Milan reached an agreement with the player months ago but now the goalposts have moved, so they are waiting and are ready to accelerate if the Parisians abandon the track.

The current Plan B is seemingly to bet on the 18-year-old Aston Villa talent Carney Chukwuemeka, who is viewed as an interesting prospect that could also be advantageous. The player’s contract expires in 2023 and as the weeks go by the Premier League side could be forced to lower their claims. You can read all about the England U19 international here.
