GdS: Milan’s pursuit of a new midfielder could drag into late August – the two targets

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan want to sign a new midfielder before the end of the summer transfer window but the situation could drag on for weeks yet, a report claims.

According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), the Milan management are prioritising the signing of Charles De Ketelaere and then will turn to recruiting a new centre-back, meaning their pursuit of a new central midfielder could continue into late August, perhaps even with the season having already started.

A lot will depend on how the Renato Sanches soap opera ends because the Portuguese international has now made it clear that he wants to play for PSG who have not yet found an agreement with Lille. Milan reached an agreement with the player months ago but now the goalposts have moved, so they are waiting and are ready to accelerate if the Parisians abandon the track.

The current Plan B is seemingly to bet on the 18-year-old Aston Villa talent Carney Chukwuemeka, who is viewed as an interesting prospect that could also be advantageous. The player’s contract expires in 2023 and as the weeks go by the Premier League side could be forced to lower their claims. You can read all about the England U19 international here.

  1. So nothing will happen then. We’ve needed this position filled since last august when Kessie weren’t gonna renew. Let kamara slip through our hands to villa for free.

  2. “the Portuguese international has now made it clear that he wants to play for PSG who have not yet found an agreement with Lille”

Once again and as said many times, Milan are making the same (big) mistake as Leeds with CDK. When a player doesn’t want to play for a club, just move on …

    1. Based on Maldini’s movement, Milan already move on since a long time ago. It is the media and the journalists who fail to move on.

  3. What position is pobega intended for? Isn’t this his position? Do we really need more alternatives. As I see it we already have 4. Tonali, Benny, Krunic, Pobega. With ony two spots open. Why would we need more players? Or are the ones we have too crappy. Why bring in Pobega then?

    1. You forgot about Adli who can play anywhere in midfield too.

As I previously said, we really don’t need another midfielder – unless we can get a superb deal with some future superstar.

    2. Having 10 players for one position is not the issue, the issue is the quality, pobega is not ready yet and can’t play In a double pivot, Adli frame is not built for that, krunic is a time bomb, technically tonali and benaccee are the only r3al midfeilders we have, Sanchez would have solved alot of issues but who leaves 4.5m for 3.2m? I will not even do it, not with that quality of Sanchez, so yes Milan is losing a good player again because of disgraceful transfer strictness

      1. “pobega is not ready yet”

LOL!!!! Have you even seen him play? He was excellent last season. In in the Torino-Milan matches he completely destroyed Kessie in both matches. Made Kessie look like a ballerina when he took away the ball from Kessie’s legs.

  4. The return of Pobega and also a words for Bennacer about his future before extend his contract maybe change milan plan in midfield.

  5. Chukwuemeka make more sense as he is still 18 years old, he can become an academy product after 3 years which will solve the squad registration issue in the long run.

In the meantime, he can be registered using the B list just like CdK. If he replace Bakayoko, the number of non-homegrown over 21 years old players will drop to 17 which is exactly the limit.

  6. I can remember we we’re linked with Gibbs-White from Wolves. Was just great at Sheffield last season. Probably just gossip, but excellent player

    1. I remember Gibbs-White when he started at Wolves, he had great potential. He went quiet for a few years, and i didn’t see him much last year, but heard good things. Would be an unusual signing, but if properly scouted, could be interesting.

    1. It is ok for serie A but not for uefa bro we needed one more promising , proven midfielder also a good rw the likes of ziyech ,in center back good even for ndicka or tanganga

  7. MIDFEILD IS NOT OKAY…..

Krunic, pobega, bakayoko are medicore in the double pivot, we need a real DM with physicality that can do the dirty works with composure just like kessie…..that type of player is one of the keys of this pioli tactics

    1. Suggesting that Pobega don’t have physicality means you haven’t seen him play. You are sooooooooo wrong about him.

    2. The midfield’s good at the moment but if we send Bakayoko back to Chelsea then we’ll need a replacement but at the moment it looks like he will stay.

Milan actually has quite a few players who can slot into the double pivot positions and perform to the standards befitting of Milan. There’s Tonali & Bennacer, who should be the starting duo and there’s also Pobega & Bakayoko who can provide a bit more grit and physicality, plus Krunic as the joker who can do a bit of everything. Those five are the main options and then there’s Calabria, who has played in the midfield before, Adli, who has played in a deep midfield role prior to coming to Milan, and I would even add Saelemaekers into the mix because not only does he have similar defensive stats to our double pivot pairing but he’s also a workhorse. Plus we all know that the kid’s no winger.

I also disagree with you that a Kessie type player is key to Pioli’s tactics. If that were true M&M would have made certain that we kept Kessie but instead of making the negotiations a priority, they opted to let him go for free. In my honest and humble opinion, I think Kessie got lucky with game time last season because of the ineffectiveness of Diaz and the constant injury setbacks that Bennacer faced. All of our defensive midfielders are great at winning tackles and getting stuck in but the difference is that Tonali & Bennacer are more efficient in the transition phase and more effective with the ball at their feet than Kessie and those skill sets are essential for the style of football Milan want to play.

      1. Well said Milanito! Frankly, Frank The Tank is/was overrated. Sure, when he played well, he played well but 90% of the times he wasn’t anything special. Certainly nothing that Benny, Tonali, Pobega & Adli couldn’t “replace”.

        1. Exactly! Kessie is good at what he does, sorta like a Gattuso but with better ball skills; an enforcer who can disrupt the opponents play, however, he’s definitely overated because he lacked consistency throughout his time at Milan. The only guarantees on the pitch that he provided were his strength and stamina, which meant he basically could run an entire 120+ if needed and he would be practically injury free. He also has a cool head, even under pressure, so he’s also a source of strength and character on the pitch in difficult moments. Those are all good qualities to have but the question moving forward was always whether those characteristics were needed, compared to maybe a more creative type player who’s capable of consistently beating players on the dribble and able to break defensive lines with key passes through fast transitional play. He doesn’t offer that, but our starting pair definitely does and it’s more suited to our pressing game. Milan already has leaders on the pitch, so he won’t missed in that regard either.

BB, you’re spot on but I just felt the need to highlight his qualities even though we don’t need him. 😂 😂 😆

          1. No hard feelings, lol. I do agree on everything you wrote above. I’m not saying he’s bad or useless – he just isn’t a type of player Milan needs.
