Inside Milan’s budget report there is a specification relating to Rafael Leao’s renewal and how the fine issue with Sporting CP was resolved.

The issue was talked about in-depth at the time of the negotiations but a quick summary is as follows: Leao owed Sporting CP money for terminating his contract early, while Lille were also involved as the club that signed him.
There were various appeals to various courts but in the end the Portuguese club were entitled to nearly €20m, meaning an agreement was needed between three clubs over the payment of the fine before an extension could be signed.
As MilanNews report, there is a section in the 2022-23 accounts which talk about Leao’s situation and what happened in order for him to be able to extend his contract until 2028.
“It should also be noted that during the month of May 2023 the Club and LOSC Lille reached an agreement for the renegotiation of the terms of the Sell-On Fee in favour of Lille relating to the possible future transfer of the player Rafael Leao
“The agreement is to be considered a modification and supplement to the one stipulated in the summer of 2019 between the two clubs in relation to the purchase of the player Leao.”
Paolo Scaroni, during question time with journalists, was asked by MilanNews about Leao’s extension and he praised CEO Giorgio Furlani for his role in things.
“The operation was managed with great skill by Giorgio Furlani: without his ability to negotiate it and understand the legal intrigue it would have been difficult to complete,” he said.
“In essence there is a five-year renewal with Leao, then the mechanics of the negotiation would be best talked about by Furlani.”
