MN: Why Furlani, Moncada and D’Ottavio are convinced by Alejo Veliz

AC Milan’s pursuit of a centre-forward continues despite the signing of Noah Okafor from Red Bull Salzburg, and it seems Alejo Veliz is the chosen name.

According to MilanNews, the management trio of Giorgio Furlani, Goeffrey Moncada and Antonio D’Ottavio are working on the signing of a striker to work alongside Olivier Giroud and Okafor, especially if Lorenzo Colombo were to leave on loan.

The radar of the scouting department has been cast towards South America and more specifically to Rosario Central, where their 19-year-old striker Alejo Veliz has caught the eye given he has 11 goals in 22 league games for them this season.

His goal in October 2022 in the derby against Newell’s Old Boys – an instinctive header which demonstrated his aerial ability – was how Veliz announced himself on the big stage.

Veliz has established himself as the starting striker for Rosario but also for the Argentina U20 national team, scoring three times in four games for them at the World Cup last month, playing alongside Luka Romero.

Why are Milan so convinced aside from his goals? Veliz reflects a typology of centre-forward much more similar to Giroud than the new addition Okafor, given that he is up for a physical battle with defenders at 190cm tall.

He has established a trend of scoring headers but can also finish with his right foot from short to medium range. Moreover, he has a €14m release clause which can be negotiated down to €12m, so Moncada has sensed the opportunity to get a talented forward without breaking the bank.
