Luka Modric has asked for guarantees from AC Milan regarding their ambitions for next season if he is to stay, Fabrizio Romano reports.

Modric once again started in the heart of the team on Sunday afternoon as Milan ran out 1-0 winners away from home against struggling Hellas Verona. The Croatian was everywhere as he usually is, running his socks off for the team and being an important shield for the defence.
However, as things currently stand, Modric has five games left before his contract with the Rossoneri expires. There seems to be reason for optimism that the former Real Madrid might might say yes to another season, though it seems various conditions must be met.
Romano: Modric wants assurances
Romano spoke about the situation surrounding Modric and the possibility of him staying for another year during an update video on his YouTube channel published this evening.
“First of all, we must emphasise that Luka Modric’s contract currently includes a unilateral option, so there’s no need for negotiations to finalise a possible renewal of the Croatian’s contract with the Rossoneri,” he said.
“Milan have taken all the necessary steps, both at the management level and in terms of convincing by his team-mates. Everyone wants him to stay at Milanello, everyone is pushing for Modric to play another season, and this remains the case, regardless of the team’s recent poor performance.
“The club, the coaching staff, and the players aren’t changing their minds and want Luka to stay with the Rossoneri, but it’s not a matter of financial gain or desire, but rather a matter that touches on other issues. Modric wants to ensure Milan are in the Champions League next season.
“He has a very strong relationship with Massimiliano Allegri, and they hold each other in high regard. But the competitiveness of the Rossoneri team must be taken into consideration, given that the Croatian is very ambitious and expects the club to provide the coach with a squad worthy of the club, especially given that they must play in a European competition.
“Therefore, Milan are doing their part and has given Modric carte blanche: whenever he wants, he can sign. There is great optimism; these are the steps, especially regarding Milan’s competitiveness.”
