It seemed like Milan would target the Italian market in the summer, with Massimiliano Allegri and Igli Tare both wanting to ‘Italianise’ the squad. However, Samuele Ricci was the only addition in this regard.

Since then, the number of national team members in the squad has wavered. The midfielder is struggling for minutes, so he is not getting regular time for the Azzurri, and Matteo Gabbia is only just getting back into the mix.
In other words, the Italianisation has not been successful.
Few Italians at Milan
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Carlo Pellegatti looked at the issue, as MilanNews relays.
“This is a completely personal opinion, nothing to belittle or underestimate anyone’s opinions, but I’m being honest. I’m not shocked to see Milan not buying Italian players. They exist, and several are even good, but the problem is that they cost twice as much as foreign players.”
There is, perhaps, an influx of talent about to come into the Azzurri thanks to the academy. However, for now at least, it seems the Rossoneri will continue to offer very little to the national team, which may be a frustration to some.

“They exist, and several are even good, ” Not exactly a great endorsement of Italian players. Some are even good… That’s why Italy has missed the last 2 World Cups and may miss out on this next one as well. Just not producing great talent anymore.
And there is a reason they aren’t producing talent anymore. He’s not having and giving Italian players a chance is one thing. But the whole series system is against Italians. They haven’t changed anything since the last 20 years. These corrupt dinosaurs still running the league will hinder the national team ever ahcieving anything. When we produced talents look at the league. We were the best. Then we were satisfied with this and stayed the same for the next several years whilst all other leagues improved. Hell squads in Italy don’t even have their own stadiums. The beirecracy and mindset in Italy is the problem here.

Ricci was labeled by fans as Milan’s savior, the player that the midfield should be built around. Based off his performances, that conversation has evaporated.
Gattuso has Gabbia on the bench behind a terrible Italy defence. I think everyone would love to see more Italians, but there just aren’t that many to quality options to choose from. Barella, Bastoni, Calafiori and Tonali,are all excellent players, but not available.

You are the same people that were saying Calabria was great and should be starting for us. Not a single Serie A team would touch him and he is now playing in the 36th ranked league in the world. There are not great Italian players. Other than Donnarumma there is not a single world class player on the squad. Dimarco would be the closest thing.
