GdS: Pioli’s changes were wrong but the quality in depth is lacking

The substitutions made by Stefano Pioli against AS Roma have been criticised but it is relevant that the bench he had to name was much weaker than he would like, a report suggests.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Milan News), some of the blame for the two dropped points against Roma can be apportioned to the changes that Pioli chose to make.

Milan were 2-0 up against the Giallorossi until the 87th minute when Roger Ibanez headed in from a corner. Milan then conceded a free kick which led to a goal for Tammy Abraham and a surprise point for Roma.

Pioli made four changes in the game. One saw Brahim Diaz come on for Tommaso Pobega who scored the second goal. The decision to remove Ismael Bennacer for Aster Vranckx appeared to destabilise Milan though and Roma started to find more space.

It should be said though, that Pioli was without nine players for this match, many of which would have started or been introduced from the bench.
