Pioli explains decision not to sign a more ready goalkeeper in January

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has claimed that the decision not to sign a new senior goalkeeper in the January transfer window was a joint one.

Milan made just one addition during the winter mercato that has just closed and that was to sign 24-year-old goalkeeper Devis Vasquez from Club Guarani in South America. Initially it was thought he could challenge Ciprian Tatarusanu for the back-up role, but Pioli has since declared him not ready for Serie A.

Despite the fact Maignan has now been out for over four months and it was known that his recovery has slowed down again recently, there was no decision to accelerate for Marco Sportiello or to move for a goalkeeper who is ready now.

Pioli was asked in his pre-match press conference about the decision not to sign a more ready profile compared to Vasquez, and his response was relayed by MilanNews.

Why wasn’t another goalkeeper signed?

“The choice was mine and that of the technical area. We didn’t sign one because we have faith in Tata and Maignan will be back soon.”
