Pioli responds to idea Milan have regressed from last season: “We all have to do better”

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli was asked some difficult questions in his press conference after the defeat against Torino last night.

It was another night to forget for the Rossoneri as they were unable to score in over 120 minutes against Torino, who played for 50 minutes of the game a man down after a red card and would eventually go on to win thanks to a goal in the second half of extra time.

It means that Milan have been knocked out in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia for the first time since 2008, and one of the trophies that might have been considered a real target has now vanished.

After the elimination from the cup, Pioli attended his post-match press conference to try and make sense of another very difficult evening for his side after Sunday’s collapse against Roma, with MilanNews relaying his comments.

What went wrong?

“We thought the match had become easy and when you think like this you lose your lucidity, you play frenetically, certainly making many mistakes in the attacking phase, without dribbling speed, without having patience in moving the defence which has become very dense and physical. We faced the numerical superiority badly mentally.”

What feelings do you have?

“Big disappointment, it was a goal to go through in the Italian Cup and not succeed after a good performance with equal numbers. We all have to do better because this is not the level of the team.”

What has changed since last year?

“These are just episodes. The results are penalising us beyond performance, but if tonight we were eliminated by a team in numerical inferiority it means that there is something to improve.”

Are the certainties of the Scudetto still there today?

“The certainties of the Scudetto are not gone, because we know what we have to do. We have our principles and we have to go back to developing them in a concrete way.”
