Repubblica: Milan pondered Galtier or Gallardo to replace Pioli – the background

There is a real possibility that Stefano Pioli might have already been out of a job by now had one of two other head coaches been available, according to a report.

According to this morning’s edition of La Repubblica (via MilanNews), the confidence in Pioli being the long-term coach of Milan seems to have evaporated and the club’s leaders are evaluating the strategy for the future.

Currently only Ignazio Abate could replace him and those in charge do not consider the Primavera boss to be ready at the moment, so any idea of him being a caretaker manager can be excluded for the time being.

The Rossoneri had thought about Christophe Galtier and Marcelo Gallardo as potential options, but the former then joined Al-Duhail in Qatar and the latter went to Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, complicating the plans of the club, which found itself almost forced to retain Pioli.

What about the future? Well, the paper are also reporting that Pioli is still under scrutiny and the next three games will be crucial in determining how long he lasts, but from next season the hierarchy want either Antonio Conte – strongly sponsored by Zlatan Ibrahimovic – or Roberto De Zerbi.
