Ahead of the game between AC Milan and Dinamo Zagreb, Alexis Saelemaekers shared his thoughts to the media. The Belgian scored the only goal vs. Salzburg and will be hoping to build on his form.
Saelemaekers has somewhat struggled to impose himself domestically this far this season, with Junior Messias getting the chance often. However, the battle on the right wing is very much open and things could change quickly.
As said, he scored Milan’s only goal against Salzburg and he also did really well throughout that game. Speaking to MilanTV, as cited by MilanNews, Saelemaekers talked about what it’s like to play in the Champions League.
On the draw against Salzburg…
“The result wasn’t what we expected but personally, I was very happy to have helped the team and won the award for the man of the match. It’s an incredible thing.”
On the intensity in the Champions League…
“I think the intensity in Europe is different from that of Serie A. We have grown in experience, last year was the first in the Champions League for many players. Now we are already more prepared and serene, we have already seen a little even in Salzburg that after the goal we conceded, we continued to work to score. A point in the Champions League is never easy to get.”
On the newcomers…
“For me, it was important to let the new arrivals know that Milan is like a home and a family. They don’t have to worry, we are lucky to have them because they are players with so much quality. I’m sure they will help us win games and do something good this year.”
On the match against Dinamo Zagreb…
“We are ready, we have recovered well and we can’t wait to play in front of our fans to get our first Champions League victory at home. I don’t think anyone expected them to win like this against Chelsea. They are a strong team onthe counter, we need to be careful about this and play at our level. We will see what happens, may the best win.”
It remains to be seen if the Belgian will be able to replicate his last UCL performance, but it certainly makes sense to play him from the first minute. Kick-off is scheduled for 18.45 CEST, meaning it’s just minutes away.
